Election campaign reaches peak

Leaders and workers of political parties are busy campaigning in the five constituencies of the district. With the next national polls due in only three days, the candidates and their workers are trying their best to reach every voter without losing any valuable moment.

A total of 30 candidates of 13 political parties will contest the polls from the constituencies under this district. Among the candidates, five each from the Awami League (AL) and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, four from the JP (Ershad), three each from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), two each from the Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) and Zaker Party, and one each from the Bangladesh Jatiyo Party, Ganoforum, Bangladesh Muslim league, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan and Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP).

The main fight will be between the AL and BNP candidates. Following the cancellation of the candidature of two BNP candidates, the AL in comfortable position in Jamalpur-1 and Jamalpur-4 seats. Mozaffar Hossain, a new candidate of the AL in Jamalpur-5, said: "We're trying our best to ensure the victory for the AL."

On the other hand, advocate Shah Md Wares Ali Mamun, a new candidate of BNP in the same constituency, said: "We're trying to woo the voters at every opportunity. But AL workers are creating panic among the voters by carrying out attacks on our leaders and followers."

He alleged that Jubo League and Chhatra League activists torn and burned posters of opposition parties in various places. They also ransacked shops, houses and electoral publicity camps of BNP activists, he claimed.

Abul Kalam Azad, the AL candidate for the Jamalpur-1 constituency (Bakshiganj- Dewanganj upazilas), is in a comfortable position as the higher court has cancelled the candidature of BNP candidate M Rashiduzzaman  Millat. Other candidates are Md Abdul Majid (Islami Andolan Bangladesh), MA Sattar (JP-Ershad) , Md Jahangir Alam (Bangladesh Jatiya Party), Md Suruzzaman (NAP) and Md Sirazul Haque (Ganoforum).

In Jamalpur-2 (Islampur upazila), the main contest will take place between Faridul Haque Khan Dulal (AL)  and  AE Sultan Mahmud Babu (BNP). Both candidates are working hard to ensure win for their respective parties.

Besides, Mostafa Al Mahmud (JP-Ershad), Manjurul Ahsan Khan (CPB) and Hafez Md Minhaj Uddin (Islami Andolan Bangladesh) are contesting from this parliamentary seat.

In Jamalpur-3 (Madarganj-Melandaha upazilas),  Mirza Azam (AL) is continuing hectic campaigning to win the race for the sixth time.

On the other hand, Md Mostafizur Rahman Babul (BNP) is also carrying out hard campaigning in the area. He said the arrest of BNP leaders and workers has hampered his electoral campaigns.  

Shiblul Bari Raju (CPB), Md Abdul Hakim Shanti (Jaker Party), Md Burhan Uddin (Islami Andolan Bangladesh) and Md Manjur Ahad Helal (JP-Eshad) are also contesting from this constituency.

In Jamalpur-4 ( Sarishabari upazila), Dr Md Murad Hassan (AL) is enjoying a relatively comfortable position following the rejection of the candidature of BNP candidate Faridul Kabir Talukdar Shamim. Other contestants in this constituency are: Mostafa Babul (BNF), Md Mokhlesur Rahman Bostu (JP-Ershad) and Ali Akbar( Islami Andolan Bangadesh).

In Jamalpur-5 ( Jamalpur Sadar), Mozaffar Hossain (AL), Shah Md Wares Ali Mamun (BNP), Sheikh Md Akkas Ali (CPB), Babar Ali Khan (Jatiya Party), Abdul Karim Sarkar (BNF), Syed Eunus Ahammed (Islami Andolan Bangladesh), Al Amin Zu Rahman( Bangladesh Muslim League), Md Belal Uddin (Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan) and Md Nazrul Islam Akanda ( Jaker Party) are in the fray.
