Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain said a tougher stance against corruption by the young generation could prevent the menace.
“The country must be freed from corruption if the young generation or students shall take a bold stance against graft with utilising their inherent power,” he said at a discussion at Shilpakala Academy in the capital yesterday organised by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) marking the International Day against Corruption.
Recalling contributions of the students in every democratic movment, he said, “Our advancements have got pace in each of the movements including anti-British movement. The voice of the studensts, which will lead the nation in future, should be raised against corruption as well as to establish the rule of law and human rights.”
“The dream and spirit of the Liberation War are being disrespected with reaching corruption in every sphere in the society. Ideal and morality have been fading away from the society. The young generation is the best resource to change the situation and it is the high time for them to take part in the anti-corruption campaign with immense commitment and creativity for building a beautiful Bangladesh,” he continued.
ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmud inaugurated a programme as part of the Commission's celebration by releasing pigeons and festoons at its Segunbagicha headquarters.
Chairman of the Commission inaugurated the event and a mass signature programme to raise awareness against graft practices. The mass signature programme will continue until December 14.
Besides, a human chain was formed in the morning where officials and employees of ACC took part.
Speaking on the occasion, the ACC chairman said, “It will not be possible for ACC to prevent the corruption alone. A collective effort with participation of all professionals, students, teachers, young and old generations is needed to raise a social movement against corruption to put an end to the menace.”
Human chains, discussions, documentary screening, and cultural programmes were arranged in districts and upazilas across the country as part of the celebration. ACC started to observe the day since 2007.
