Two second half strikes enabled Bangladesh to make a winning start in the AFC Under-19 Qualifying round when they blanked Sri Lanka by 2-0 in the second match yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Mannaf Rabbi opened the scoring on 67th minute while captain Masuk Meah Jony doubled the lead.
Bangladesh played almost one-sided game throughout the 90 minutes game and also kept the opponents under pressure but had to wait to break the deadlock for a long 66 minutes while in the first 45 minutes they could create only one real chance to score.
However, it was a combined attack down the right side and forced Sri Lankan defender to halt it at the cost of a corner and Sri Lankan goalkeeper Mohammed Rishad denied two consecutive attempts from Ibrahim and Rohit Sarkar.
Ibrahim took the first attempt on a Mannaf Rabbi flank kick but Rishad denied it from close range and Rohit Sarkar took the chance on rebounder but the goalkeeper was worked like a wall to save the effort.
After the goalless first half, Bangladesh looked more hostile to score goals and were closer to open the net inside three minutes of the post lemon break but this time also the goalkeeper gripped a strong right footer of Rohit on a Ibrahim pass confidently on 48th.
Mannaf Rabbi finally broke the deadlock on 67th minute when it was a good finish of a combined attack as he beat the Sri Lankan goalkeeper from the goal-mouth melee after a strong effort of Rohit Sarker rebounded (1-0).
Bangladesh inspired by taking the lead, became more aggressive to extend the margin but most of their attacks were tackled by the Sri Lankan defenders, who played with a full defensive strategy.
However, the hosts Bangladesh doubled the advantage when Masuk Meah Jony converted a penalty on 83rd minute (2-0).
Earlier, favourites Uzbekistan made a flying start in the AFC Under-19 Qualifying round with thrashing Bhutan by 7-0.
In the one-sided, Uzbekistan dominated the match despite they took 42 minutes to take the lead. Abdixolikov Bobir netted twice, while Gofurov Husniddin, Sharof Mukhtidinov, Kudirkulov Sanjar, Sayidjamol Davlatjonov and Tukhtasinov Nurillo scored one each.
