V-Day programmes in N’ganj

The district administration here has taken three day long programmes to celebrate the glorious 47th Victory Day on December 16 in a befitting manner. A preparation meeting held to finalise details of programmers in the conference hall of the DC office with deputy commissioner Rabbi Mia in the chair. One minute silence was observed as a token of respect to the departed soul of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the start of the meeting. A victory day observance committee 2018 was formed headed by Deputy Commissioner and five sub-committees have been formed to make the programmes a success.
World Soil Day observed

Soil scientists and researchers at a post-rally discussion here on Wednesday stressed the need for protecting soil health for increasing crop production to ensure food security of the country. They expressed concern over declining soil productivity due to indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides round the year.
The soil scientists and researchers were addressing the rally organised to mark the World Soil Day-2018. ‘Be the Solution to Soil Pollution’ was the main theme of the day.
Regional office of Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI) organised the discussion in its conference room in the city.
Chaired by Dr Abu Tawab Khandaker, principal scientific officer of SRDI, the meeting was addressed, among other, by deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension Shamsul Haque, principal scientific officer of Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute Dr Ilias Hossain, SRDI Senior Scientific Officer Dr Nurul Islam and senior scientific officer of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute Dr Shakhawat Hossain.
BRCS observes Int’l Volunteer Day

Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BRCS) on Wednesday celebrated the International Volunteer Day-2018 amid various programmes across the country including its headquarters in the capital. The theme of the day was ‘Thanks Volunteer’, said a press release.
To mark the day, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society has chalked out elaborate programmes including distribution of leaflets among the city pedestrians and providing voluntary service to the traffic police at city’s two important points — Maghbazar and Bangla Motor — for creating awareness on road crossing among the people.
Besides, hand washing programme was held at three city schools, city slums at Tejgaon railway and Pearabagh, children art competition at two disabled schools and distribution of gifts were among the programmes.
In addition to this, the district red crescent units also have taken various programmes at the respective districts marking the day.
New journo forum formed

A 34-member journalist forum for Bangladesh Institute of Juche Idea formed with Jamal Uddin Jamal, assistant editor of Ajker Sangbad and Mahbub Alam, news editor of Dainik Agrasar as president and general secretary respectively, says a press release.
The others office bearers elected are: Vice-president Khaled Faruki, news editor of Protidiner Sangbad, joint secretary Raju Ahmed, former general secretary of DRU, organising secretary, Ilias Hossain president of DRU and office secretary Howlader Jamal Uddin, news editor of Daily Industry.
Other executive members include—columnist Ershad Majumder, former DRU general secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Tapu, columnist Shah Ahmed Reza and former joint secretary of Jatiya Press Club Ashraf Ali.
