18 aspirants to contest polls from Chuadanga

A total of 18 candidates in Chuadanga submitted their nomination papers on November 28 for contesting the parliamentary election.
In Chuadanga-1, Solaiman Hoque Joarder Selun of the AL; Ohidul Islam Biswas,Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, Sayeed Kamruzzaman and Md Sharifuzzaman of the BNP; Sahrab Hossain of the JP; M Sabed Ali of the JSD-Inu; Towhid Hossain of the JSD-Rob; Almas Hossain of the Jaker Party; Johurul Islam of the Islami Andalan; and Marina Akhtar of the Muslim League submitted their nomination papers. In Chuadanga-2, Ali Azgar Togar (AL), Mahmud Hasan Khan (BNP), Abdul Latif Khan (Jaker Party), Hasanuzzaman (Islami Andalan), Sheikh Lalan Ahmmed (Gonofront), Noor Hakim (independent) and Ruhul Amin (independent) submitted their nomination papers to the returning officer.
Baby ‘slapped dead’ in Sirajganj

An 11-month-old baby girl, who was slapped allegedly by a neighbour at Khalishapur village in Sadar upazila on Friday, died early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Amina Khatun, daughter of Rashed Ali of the village.
Victim’s mother Rokeya Khatun said she locked into an altercation with neighbour Jahangir Hossain on Friday afternoon over damaging plants by a goat. At one stage, Jahangir slapped Amina on the back, leaving her ill. The baby girl died in the early hours of Saturday, Rokeya said.
On information, police recovered the body in the morning and arrested Jahangir Hossain 36, and his father Mobarak Ali, 60, said officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Rafiqul Islam.
Elderly couple found dead
UNB, Barguna
An elderly couple was found dead at their house at Nali in Sadar upazila on Friday morning. The deceased were identified as Abdul Mannan, 75, and his wife Fatema Begum, 60.
Police detained couple’s elder son Rony and his wife Koli for interrogation over the incident. Arif Mohammad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the couple went to sleep on Thursday night as usual.
Getting no response from them since late morning, relatives stormed the room only to find them lying dead, he said. On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Barguna General Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC said. There was no injury mark on the bodies as per the viscera report, he said, adding that they will be sure about the incident after getting the autopsy report. “We’ve taken the couple’s elder son and his wife to the police station for interrogation.”
Locals said Rony who runs a restaurant in the district town recently asked his mother to give him Tk 1 lakh for expanding the business after selling their land.
As Fatema declined to sell the land, Rony and his wife behaved indecently with her. An arbitration was scheduled to be held today (Friday) in this regard.
47 arrested in Satkhira

Police, in special drives arrested 47 persons from eight upazilas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning.
Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
During the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 15 persons, Kalaroa Thana police arrested six persons, Tala Thana police arrested four persons, Kaliganj Thana police arrested five persons, Shyamnagar Thana police arrested three persons, Assasuni Thana police arrested eight persons, Patkelghata Thana police arrested three persons and Debhata police arrested three persons.
