Three of a family burnt in gas cylinder blast

UNB, Savar

Three members of a family sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion in Ashulia yesterday.

The injured were garment workers Akram Hossain, his wife Lovely Akhter and their eight-year old son Ashiqur Rahman, hailing from Madhukhali in Faridpur district.

Humayun Kabir, station officer of Ashulia DEPZ Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, said the gas spread all over in their room in a building owned by Mostafa Dewan in Pashchim Bypile area following a leakage in the gas line of the cylinder.

When one of the victims Lovely Akhter tried to ignite the stove for cooking around 5am, the fire originated and the gas cylinder blasted with a bang soon it came into contact with the fire, said the station officer.

Hearing screaming of the house inmates, locals rescued them and took to a local hospital. As their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The fire also damaged an electronic shop adjoining to the house, he added.

Man killed falling off city building

UNB, Dhaka

 A man was killed after falling off a five-storey building in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Monoranjan Biswas, 60, son of late Hiralal Biswas hailing from Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district.

Victim’s neighbour Bidhan Biswas said Monoranjan slipped down from the rooftop of the building around 1pm when he went there to check the water tank, leaving him severely injured.

 He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where duty doctors declared him dead around 1:45pm, said sub-inspector Bachchu Mia of the DMCH police camp.

2 held over double murder at Turag

BSS, Dhaka

Detective Branch (DB) of police unearthed the mystery of the double murder case at Turag with capturing two persons allegedly involved in the killings from the city’s Adabar and Shanirakhra areas on Friday.

 “We arrested two persons, Md Monir Hossain and Md Farid, for their involvement in killing two people at Turag on October 20 last, from Dhaka Udyan at Adabar and Shanirakhra areas around 4.15pm and 11.30pm on Friday respectively,” said a DB official.

Police also recovered sharp local weapons, da and iron rod, used in the killings, he said, adding that the arrestees confessed their link to the double murder during preliminary interrogation. Earlier on October 20, police recovered the bodies of Kamal Hossain, 24, son of Shaikh Jalil of Sadarpur of Faridpur district and Imon Shaikh, 25, son of Md Azam Shaikh of Nagarkanda of the same district, from 2 no plot at Uttara under Turag Police Station.

Shaikh Jalil, father of the victim Kamal filed a murder case with Turag Police Station to this end.

DMP files 3046 cases for traffic rule violations

BSS, Dhaka

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the city streets on Friday filed 3046 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violations.

It also realised around Taka 10.07 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release.

Of the total cases, 287 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 58 for using hydraulic horn, 10 for using hotter and beckon light and 17 others for using tinted glass. Police filed 824 cases against motorcycles and seized 92 others for violation of the traffic rules. Traffic police has dumped 26 vehicles and wrecked 653 others.
