Students of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department (EEE) of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday boycotted the classes and examination and put the science building under lock and key protesting the RU authority’s decision to convert Applied Physics and Electronic Engineering department (APEE) into EEE department.
According to university sources, the students of EEE department locked room No. 315 of science building around 10am. They also brought out a silent rally around 11pm on the campus.
The EEE students said that they would face various problems if this decision is implemented. They don’t want the conversion as their syllabus is different, they claimed.
Professor Dr Abu ZafarMohammad Touhidul Islam said university authority will take proper measures with talking to students.
“Every individual has separate identity. We also want an identity”, said he. Students of applied physics and electronic engineering (APEE) have been also demonstrating on the campus demanding conversion of their department into the EEE department. They have been boycotting classes from November 11 and announced to continue the agitation till December 5.
They claimed that there was no university in the country where these two disciplines existed at the same time. The two disciplines had the same curriculum, said they. RU VC Professor Dr M Abdus Sobhan assured them of solving their problem as the students of APPE department met with him recently. University Proctor Professor Dr Luthfar Rahman said, “I urge the protesting students to return to classes. University authority would take action after discussing the issue in next academic meeting”, he added.
