HC order on Khaleda’s plea deferred

The High Court yesterday deferred till Sunday for passing its order on a writ petition filed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia challenging the legality of the government decision to take her back to jail from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

The HC bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil, which was scheduled to deliver its order on the petition yesterday, deferred the date following a supplementary petition filed by  Barrister Kaiser Kamal, one of the counsels for BNP chief.

However, the content of the supplementary petition could not be known yesterday. Earlier, on October 6, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was admitted to BSMMU after prison authorities shifted her there from jail for better treatment in response to a court order.

On October 4, the High Court directed the government to immediately admit Khaleda Zia to BSMMU and to form a medical board to examine Khaleda's health condition.

The former premier was taken to old central jail from BSMMU on November 8 for producing before a makeshift court inside the jail for hearing of Niko graft case. After the hearing, the court sent her to jail.

Khaleda Zia was in the erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road since she was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8.
