Almost 30 years ago, ‘Galileo’ was brought to the country’s stage for the first time. The play was directed by noted playwright and actor Ataur Rahman. Though the play had been shown on a regular basis for the next 10 years at that time, the staging of the play has been stopped since last 20 years. This time around, ‘Galileo’ is set to return to the stage in a form which will be directed by Pantha Shahriar.

Today, Nagorik Natya Sampradaya, one the prominent theatre troupes in the country, is going to stage the play after 20 years at the Mahila Samiti in the capital’ Baily Road area at 7pm. Professor Abdus Selim has translated the play into Bangla based on ‘Life of Galileo’, also known as Galileo, is a play by the twentieth-century German dramatist Bertolt Brecht with incidental music by Hanns Eisler.

The 46th production of Nagorik Natya Sampradaya’s ‘Galileo’ includes Aly Zaker, Asaduzzaman Noor, Pantha Shahriar, Ruhe Tamanna Labonyo, Farhana Mithu, Abdur Rashid, Mostafiz Shaheen and many others in different characters.

Pantha Shahriar said about directing the play, “‘Gelileo’ under the direction of Ataur Rahman was a two and half hours-play. This time, I have shortened it to one and half hours. By now the audience had grown impatient to watch two and half hours-play. As a result, I have planned to stage the play in a slightly new way”.

Sara Zaker, assisted by Nima Rahman, is in the costume design, while Nasirul Haq Khokon is behind the light direction. Sara Zaker is also the executive director of this production.

Tickets will be available at the counter of the Mahila Samiti today from 5pm onwards.

To note, the next show of the play will be held on October 14 at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segun Bagicha of the capital.
