Headmaster arrested over shaving heads of 5 students
Thakurgaon: Police arrested the headmaster of a high school from his house at Madhabpur village in Sadar upazila yesterday morning allegedly for shaving heads of five male students, reports UNB.The arrestee is Abdul Jabbar, 52, the headmaster of Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar High School and joint convener of BNP Ruhia thana unit. He was also former chairman of Akhanagar union of the upazila. Pradip Kumar Roy, officer-in-charge of Ruhia Police Station, said Jabbar called five students of class X around 2pm to school on Sunday to attend an arbitration meeting and blamed them for harassing a female student of the school. Though the students claimed that they are innocent and have no involvement in the harassment incident, the headmaster beat them up, he said. Later, the students’ heads were shaved by a barber in presence of local people. Faridul Islam, father of one student, filed a case with Ruhia police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Six hurt in gas cylinder blast
Pabna: Six people sustained injured in a gas cylinder explosion at the National Development Fair premises in front of Ishwardi Upazila Parishad office yesterday, reports UNB. The victims were identified as Bappi, 35, a balloon vendor and son of Shukkur Ali of Gobinda area in Sadar upazila, Tushar Hossain, 10, son of Bhodon, Alim Hossain, 13, son of Abu Syed, Sohan Hossain, 10, son of Nasim Uddin Khoka, Farhad hossain, 12, son of Faruk Hossain and Rabbi, 11, son of Rustom Ali of Ishwardi uapzila headquarters. Zobair Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said the gas cylinder of a balloon vendor went off with a big bang, 60 meter away from the main stage, leaving four students and the vendor injured. Later, they were taken to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex from where five of them were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, he added.
12 robbers held with arms
Bhola: Local fishermen caught 12 pirates with some indigenous arms from Meghna River in Monpura Island of the district on Tuesday night, reports UNB. Fishermen Liton Mazi, Rased Mazi and Hemuz Mazi said pirates with two trawlers attacked them while they were netting fish in the river area around 9:30 pm. Following the attack, they started shouting for help from pirate attack. Sensing this matter, nearby at least 15 trawlers of the fishermen came forward and caught the pirates from one trawler, they added. On information, members of coastguard and police arrested them and brought them to Monpura Police Station, said Abdul Aziz, commander of Monpura Coastguard Station. The arrestees were identified as Md Hatem, 48, Monirul Islam, 35, Shadat, 38, Mosleahuddin, 45, Chadek, 49, Nuruddin, 40, Abul Hossain, 45, Mofizul Islam, 46, Rafiqul Islam, 77, Ismail, 42, Nur Islam, 45, and Rahim, 19, residents of different upazilas of Laxmipur district. A case was filed with the police station in this connection, the commander added.
Woman slaughtered in Rajshahi
Rajshahi: A woman was slaughtered by miscreants at her house at Jitpur in Tanore upazila on Wednesday night, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as Zohara Begum, 50. After separation with her husband Helal Uddin, she used to stay with her son Jahangir Alam at the village. Quoting locals, police said a group of miscreants stormed the house of Jahangir around 9pm and swooped on his wife Rumi Khatun with sharp weapons. As Zohara came in the rescue of Rumi, the attackers slit her throat, leaving her dead on the spot. Locals took injured Rumi to Tanore Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-charge of Tanore Police Station Rezaul Islam said they were trying to arrest the culprits.
