Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal returns home today after the team management finally ruled him out from the Asia Cup following a wrist injury which he suffered during the match against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Coming off with a form of his life, Tamim set his bar high in the regional tournament but much to his grief, he could face only four balls in the match before being ruled out. When a Suranga Lakmal delivery hit his wrist, it was almost sure that Tamim won’t be part of the game further.
He was immediately sent to hospital to do a scan which revealed a huge fracture, which needs almost six weeks or bigger time to be healed. However he heroically came out at number 11 and played a delivery one-handed to allow Bangladesh's innings to continue.
Although the team management knew that the injury wouldn’t him allow to play any game in the tournament further, they were waiting for the second scan after which team manager Khaled Mahmud confirmed that he was indeed ruled out.
“I can say now that Tamim has been ruled out of the Asia Cup,” Mahmud told the reporters. “We cannot say yet for how long he will be out. His reports will be sent to a specialist and then we can tell you.” While talking to the reporters on Sunday Tamim indeed hinted that he may not play any match in the tournament further.
''I have been extremely downcast since last night. Yesterday, after what happened, I had the realisation that I won't play a part in this Asia Cup. So, I did however much was possible for me to do. I thought that if I was destined to play just one more ball in the Asia Cup, I thought 'why not that ball?' After that there was an important partnership because of that one ball, those are important issues, but at the end of the day I am very heartbroken,'' said Tamim.
Nazmul Hossain Shanto, back-up opener is almost certain to make his debut when Bangladesh would take on Afghanistan in the last match of the group phase on Thursday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) however is yet to announce the replacement of Tamim Iqbal.
