Youths crushed under train

Sylhet: Two unidentified young men crushed to death under the wheels of a train at Sylhet Railway Station on Saturday night. The age of the youths is around 20 years, said Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Sylhet GRP Police Station. The duo fell down as they were trying to board Dhaka-bound 'Upoban Express' around 10 pm while it was leaving the platform and crushed to death under the train wheels. The victims used to push rickshaws on the Keane Bridge in the city, the OC added.

DSK vows to make Gazipur a model city

Gazipur: Dustha Shastha Kendra (DSK), a development focused private enterprise, has pledged to make a part of Gazipur city a model in terms of pure drinking water, proper sanitation and health related issues. As part of that vision, the private entity organised a workshop and view-exchange meeting at a resort in Rajendrapur with the participation of 25 local journalists in the afternoon. Speakers at the meeting said, DSK with the assistance of H&M kicked-off working at ward no 22 of the city in 2016, with a view to rendering their framed services to 10,000 city dwellers of the area. The voluntary organisation has set up 61 sub-marine pumps, 59 community toilets, pure drinking water for around 6 thousand people of the area till the last June. The project will be continued up to 2020. Introduced in 1989, DSK has been working for the betterment of water safety, sanitation, nutrition, and food safety for underprivileged sections of the population.

19 BNP, Jamaat men held

Police in separate drives arrested 19 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami from different areas of Chattogram from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) in separate drives arrested them suspecting BNP-Jamaat activists. After interrogation, if anyone found innocent will be released, said Moinuddin Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Model Police Station.

Debate Competition held

RAJSHAHI: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, MP, has said debate competition is very much effective to flourish the latent talents of students, reports BSS. He put emphasis on arranging debate competitions more and more so that the students can get the scopes of grooming them with modern knowledge. The state minister was addressing the ‘First Radio Boral Inter-College Debate and Speech Competition- 2018’ at Shahdowla Degree College playground under Bagha upazila in the district on Saturday as chief guest. Chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shaheen Reza, the event was addressed, among others, by local Awami League leaders Sujit Kumar Panday, Proshanta Sarker. Shahriar Alam said the present government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given top priority to education development. He appealed to the people to cast vote for ‘Boat’, election symbol of Awami League, in the upcoming election as the country enjoys a peaceful environment during the regime of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
