Students of Geography and Environment department in Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday staged a sit-in programme in front of their department demanding to continue their regular classes and examinations. About at 11 am, over two hundred of students took position in front of the department by locking the main entrance.

Students from the demonstration urged the teachers to come back to classes leaving their unannounced strike. They vowed to continue their protest until their demands are fulfilled. Mohammad Dider, a protesting student, said, “Classes and examinations started in all departments of university after Eid vacation. But academic activities are remained closed though two weeks have already been passed.

We requested teachers to resolve their conflict but they failed to reach solution”.

“Now, we compelled to go for movement for continuing academic activities’, he added.

In the meantime, due to the blockade by the students, teachers of the department were trapped inside the main entrance. Student’s movement was going on till filing the report.

Earlier, a faction of teachers was observing an unannounced strike for indefinite period demanding the academic meeting of the department and abstained from taking classes and examinations from August 3.

Meanwhile the chairman of the department Prof Manzurul Hasan called an emergency meeting today in face of students’ protest.

When contacted Prof Manzurul Hasan said, “I have nothing to do if any teachers do not take class in proper time”.

He urged the teachers of the department to leave their unannounced strike and come back to class.
