Assistant teachers of primary schools will observe work abstention from 9 am to 12 noon from September 19 to 21 and full day work abstention on September 22 to meet their six demands. The decision on work abstention came at a press briefing after leaders of four associations of primary school teachers held a joint meeting in Dhaka yesterday. The teachers’ demands include hiking the salary of the primary teachers to the 11th grade of the 8th pay scale, promotion of assistant teachers as headmasters by dint of their capabilities, change in the recruitment policy to ensure that one must have an honours certificate if he or she wants to be an assistant primary teacher, and separate pay scale for the primary teachers in accordance with the National Education Policy, 2010.
