Mohammad Ishtiaq lived up to his billing as he emphatically clinched the boys’ singles title of second phase in the Bengal Plastics Asian 14/U Series Tennis.
Top seed Ishtiaq overpowered Mehedi Hasan 6-3, 6-1 in the final at the National Tennis Complex in the capital yesterday. He won the singles title in the first phase beating Jubin Omar last week.
However, he was deprived of earning a double crown in the second phase when Hridoy Hasan and Aurnab Saha won the doubles final beating Ishtiaq and Naimul Islam 6-4, 6-4. The latter grabbed the doubles title in the first phase beating Aurnab Saha and Mehedi Hasan by 2-0 sets. Popy Akhter finished the double-leg tournament in style when she clinched a double crown in both phases. Popy shocked Fabiah Lasima Suchana in the singles finals of both legs. Popy and her partner Ety Akhter ran away with girls’ doubles title without facing much resistance in both phases.
The State Minister for Foreign Affairs and President of Bangladesh Tennis Federation Md Shahriar Alam distributed prizes as chief guest.
