9 killed in road crashes

Nine persons were killed in separate road accidents in M’singh, Jhinaidah, Tangail and Bogura yesterday.

In Mymenshingh four motorcyclists were killed in Tarakanda, Sadar and Phulpur upazilas yesterday, reports UNB.

In Tarakanda upazila, two motorcyclists-- Din Islam, 40, and Yasin, 45, -- were killed when a bus hit their vehicle in Kakni area around 11:30am, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tarakanda police station.

In Trishal upazila, motorcyclist Jewel Miah was killed when a bus rammed his vehicle in Kajir Simla area around 10am.

In Phulpur upazila, another motorcyclist Rezaul Karim was killed as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw hit his motorbike in Balia area, said A K M Mahbubul Alam, officer-in-charge of Phulpur police station.

In Bogura two friends were killed in a road crash on Bagura-Natore Highway in Bijoyghat area of Nandigram upazila on Saturday night.

The deceases were identified as Ferdous Alam, 45, son of late Mayen Uddin of Namuit village and Ismail Hossain, 53, son of late Manik Uddin of Kadma village of the same upazila.

The accident took place when a speeding microbus hit an auto-rickshaw carrying the due around 9 pm, leaving Ismail dead on the spot, said Abdul Bari, chairman of Nandigram Sadar Union.

Ferdous was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead on the same night, he added.

Meanwhile, three more were killed in Jhinaidah and Tangail.

Besides, police arrested the bus owner from Bagura district yesterday in a case filed over the fatal road accident in Lalpur upazila in Natore that left 15 people dead, reports UNB.

The arrestee is Manju Sarker, the owner of 'Challenger Paribahan'.

A team of police arrested Manju from Madhya Palsa area of the district town around 12:30pm.

The arrested bus owner told police during interrogation that that he had bought the unfit BRTC bus at an auction and started to operate it on Kushtia-Bagura road after repairing.

Mofiz Uddin, manager (operation) of BRTC Bagura Bus Depot, said that there is no option of operating unfit and abandoned bus on road after its sale at auction.

Manju also revealed that the name of the bus driver is Shamim, a resident of Malgram and helper is Komol, a resident of Gokul village in Sada rupazila.

According his information, police conducted a drive to arrest the driver and the helper who went into hiding after the incident.

A case was filed against seven people over the fatal road accident.
