Rain likely today as low in Bay raises mercury

The mercury shot up to 36.5 degrees Celsius and humidity was high in the city yesterday (Friday), something unusual with the monsoon still active over the country. It was because a low pressure area formed in the east-central Bay yesterday afternoon, which spawned a low by the evening, the second since another low had formed over the Bay on September 15. Lack of rain over the past couple of days and departure of a well-marked low moving onshore, forming a land depression over the Indian states of Odisha and Andhra, leaving behind a trough over the Bay, was responsible for the unusual heat and humidity. The 36.5C temperature in the capital was the second time in the current spell of the monsoon since June 5, the met office said.
Besides Dhaka, the day's highest temperature of 38.2C was recorded in the northern plains of Bogra, recovering from a spell of flooding for nearly a month. However, the met office said, the heat and humidity may not be there from today, as there were chances of rain.
More rain is expected on Sunday and may continue till Thursday. There may be scattered showers on the day of Eid-ul-Azha on Friday. The weather forecast said rainfall may increase in the next two days and may subside in the latter part of the next five-day period.
