North Korea oust Bangladesh

North Korea shattered Bangladesh hopes of making a last eight berth in the Asian Games men’s football when they earned a hard fought 3-1 win in a knockout stage match in Jakarta yesterday.

North Korea took the lead through Kim Yu Song in the 13t minute and Han Yong Thae doubled the lead by converting a penalty in the 37th minute, while Kang Kuk Chol scored a another goal in the 69th minute.

Saad Uddin scored a consolation goal for Bangladesh in injury time.   

This was for the first time that Bangladesh football team could reach the knockout phase of Asian Games since its inception in the Games in 1978.  

Meanwhile, Bangladesh tasted their first defeat in the men’s hockey of Asian Games at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Hockey Ground in Jakarta yesterday when they went down to Malaysia by 7-0.

Bangladesh conceded three goals each in the second and third and last one in the fourth quarter after keeping the first quarter a barren.

Bangladesh, who started the tournament with a target of finishing sixth, were still in a position to reach their target after playing three matches. Bangladesh defeated Oman by an odd goal in three in the first match and then crushed Kazakhstan 6-1. Bangladesh will play their next match against Thailand tomorrow and complete their Pool-B fixtures with Pakistan on August 28.

In fact Bangladesh failed to create any field goal chance although they got one penalty corner. Malaysia netted four field goals, two from penalty corners and one from penalty stroke.

Abd Rahim Muhammed Razie slammed home twice, while Mohd Noor Nabil Fiqri, Sari Mohd Amnird Aideed and Van  Huzen Joel Samuel netted one goal each.

Earlier on Wednesday Bangladesh outplayed Kazakhstan by 6-1 goals in the 2nd match.

Mohammad Arshad Hossain and Ashraful Islam scored for Bangladesh in the opening match against Oman while Khorshedur Rahman struck two, Fazle Hossain Rabbi, Rasel Mahmud Jimmy, Mamunur Rahman Chayan and Koushik scored one each in their 2nd match.

UNB adds: Bangladesh's famed archer Mohammad Ruman Shana was eliminated from the pre-quarterfinals of Recurve men's individual event of the 18th Asian Games Archery losing to Agata Salabilla Riau Ega of Indonesia 4-6 at the GBK Archery Field in Jakarta on Thursday.

Ruman Shana, who was placed 3rdscoring 677 in the ranking round, beat Thamwong Wittthawa of Thailand 6-2 in the round of 16 eliminations.

Another Bangladeshi archer Ibrahim Sheikh Rezwan beat Ormanee Soulivong of Laos 6-0 in the round of 32 eliminations in the same event, losing to Li Jialun of China 2-6 in the round of 16.

In the recurve women's individual, Mistee Khatun of Bangladesh lost to Tangle Nicole Marie of the Philippines 5-6 in the round of 32 eliminations at the same venue.

Besides, Imdadul Haque and Tamimul Islam of Bangladesh were placed 38th and 44th respectively in the ranking round and made their early exit on the day.

After Ruman Sana’s elimination, Bangladesh probably lost all hopes of winning ay medal. Even women’s kabddi team who won bronze medal in last two Games were also ousted from the race.

Similarly Bangladesh shooters. Both male and female, also fared a very poor show on Thursday to conclude the competition empty handed.
