Man killed in cylinder blast   

A rickshaw-van puller was killed as a gas cylinder exploded in Sadarghat area of the port city Chattogram yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Kamal Uddin, 50. The cylinder blew off after it fell down when the rickshaw-van puller was handling it at a ghat of the Karnaphuli River, killing him on the spot, said Nizam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat Police Station.

Woman held with 2.75kg gold

Customs officials detained a woman along with gold bars weighing around 2.75 kilograms at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport on Monday. The detainee was identified as Sultana Yasmin, daughter of late Mosharrof Hossain of Mirpur in Dhaka. The customs officials of the airport detained the woman coming from Dubai on a Dubai Airlines flight around 5:20 pm and recovered the gold bars concealed inside her shoes and abdomen, said Assistant Revenue Officer Maidul Islam of Customs Intelligence Department.

35 sued over JCD leader’s death   

A case has been filed accusing 35 people in connection with the killing of a Chhatra Dal leader in an attack near the house of elected Sylhet Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury in Kumarpara area on August 11. Dabir Ali, the uncle of victim Foyzul Haque Raju, 32, a former assistant publication secretary of Sylhet city JCD, filed the case with Kotwali Police Station on Monday night accusing 23 named people including former organising secretary of Sylhet city JCD Absur Rokib Chowdhury and 12 unnamed, saidMohammdAbdul Wahab Miah, additional deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police. Police also arrested an accused Alfu Miah in this connection, he added. Earlier on August 11, Raju came under attack in front of the house of Ariful during a rally marking his victory in the Sylhet City Corporation Election and died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Two other leaders also injured in the attack.
