Family Medicine is the discipline upon which general/family practice, is based (Islam, 1998) unlike the existing specialities, which are specialities in depth, it is a

speciality in breadth covering not only curative, but also preventive, promotive and rehabilitative services- whole patient care at individual/ambulatory care level.

Family medicine is thus a speciality which transcends specialities, as it integrates them to a comprehensive whole.” The general practitioner is a specialist in his own right, by virtue of his unique and essential contribution in the medical care.” (Report of Royal Commission on Medical Education, Todd, 1968).

The scope of family practice encompasses

all ages, sexes, each organ system and disease entity. Physicians practicing family medicine are known as family physicians. They are members of the family with knowledge and skill in medical science.

Only family physicians can provide accessible, cost-beneficial and equitable healthcare. The family physician provides definitive care to the undifferentiated patient at the point of the contact and takes continuing responsibility for providing the patients care, family physicians must be specially trained to provide services. There is no alternative of learning.
