National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque yesterday demanded for getting the public transport system rid of irregularities and mismanagement to ensure safe streets, reports BSS.
In a statement in the wake of students’ streets protest, Hoque called for quick implementation of logical demands of the protesting students to help ensure safe streets.
“All people, including women and children, have rights to travel safely in streets. It is a human right,” he said.
Hoque asked the authorities concerned to remove hassle in vehicle registration and getting of fitness, route permit and license. He suggested for not standing negligence of duties and corruption in the public transport system.
He also strongly condemned attacks of transport workers on school-going children who were protesting for ensuring safe streets following deaths of two students in road accident recently. The NHRC chief also urged the concerned authorities to stay alert so that none can harm the people cashing on in the students’ movement.
Hoque conveyed deep sympathy to the family members of two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, who were killed in a road accident on Airport Road in the capital on Sunday last.
