People extend
support to students
agitating on streets

The student-led protest for a safer road has garnered affection and appreciation from common people who were seen supporting the agitating students with food and water at different parts of the capital. Tania Ferdousi, a math teacher of an English Medium School was distributing snacks among the students at Dhanmondi 27 intersection at around 2pm yesterday. “These kids are controlling traffic here from the morning. I don’t know whether they have eaten anything or not. That’s why I brought these,” said Tania. She also said that the students have come down onto the street for a just cause and she is supporting it wholeheartedly. Moinul Ahsan, an employee of a market research company also thinks the students’ protest for a safer road should be supported by the common people.

Moinul who bought mineral waters for the agitating students at Science Laboratory intersection told The Independent that buses have been driving on the city roads recklessly for years.

“They don’t even bother to reduce the speed near an educational institution. This has to change. Too many lives are already lost,” he said.

In social media, a number of videos have already gone viral in where women—seemingly the guardians of some students—were seen feeding the protesting students amid the yesterday’s downpour.

Thousands of people commented in those post. Sadia Amin, an employee of a multinational company wrote: “A mother should be like this. I wish I could be there to feed those kids. Go ahead.”

Nihad Ferdous, a banker wrote: “Go ahead students. We are all with you.”

The agitating students also felt the support of the common people. Sadat Raihan, a student of Tejgaon Science College who was found controlling traffic told The Independent, “Everyone is cooperating with us. Some gave us food, some water. But most importantly they gave us motivation to continue the protest”.
