Man to die for killing wife

SIRAJGANJ: A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Tarash upazila of the district in 2008, reports BSS.

The court also fined the convict Nur Hossain, 40, Tk 10,000. District Judge Fazle Khoda Md Nazir, also a judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1, pronounced the verdict.

Court’s Public Prosecutor (PP) Sheikh Abdul Hamid Lavlu confirmed the  matter.

According to the prosecution, Nur Hossain beat his wife Sabana to death on January, 2008 for dowry.

After the incident, Abu Sayed, brother of the victim, filed a murder case against Nur Hossain.

The judge after examining the witnesses and evidences handed down the verdict.

Three children drown

Two minor cousins drowned in a pond at Sonaimuri village of Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur on Monday.

The deceased was identified as SinthiaAkhter, 6, daughter of Delwar Hossain and a  student of Belcho Govt Primary School, and Maria Akhter, 5, a play-class student of Belcho Al-Kawsar Academy.

Family members said that  Sinthia and Maria went missing after they had returned home from school around 1:30 pm. After an hour of frantic search, family members spotted their floating body in the pond nearby their houses.

In Faridpur, a minor boy drowned in a canal while playing near its bank at Karigar Dangi village in Charbhadrasan upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Hamza, 2, son of Yunus Mia of the village.

College girl commits suicide

A female college student reportedly hanged herself with the ceiling fan of her house at Shoronpur village in Manirampur Upazila in the district on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Shetu, 18, student of Jhikargacha Mahila College and daughter of Nishter Ali of Shoronpur village.

Sub-inspector Ayenuddin, in-charge of Khada police out-post, said the body was sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Police also recovered a suicide note from her room, he said.

Deceased family members said Shetu's husband Mostafizur Rahman Apu married another girl three days ago which caused huge mental stress on Shetu.

Shetu's father filed a case with Manirampur Police Station in this connection.
