While he was just his shadow in the Test series, a reason that hurt Bangladesh chances in Caribbean Island in the longer version format, opener Tamim Iqbal flourished with full glory in the ODI series to give Bangladesh first ever series victory outside Asia since 2009. His 130 not out gave the side a winning start, shrugging of the shock of Test series and then his magnificent 103 in the series-deciding third match, his 11th ODI ton, helped the side win it by 18 runs to seal the series.
The last time they won series outside Asia, also in West Indies but that was against a depleted West Indian side, without their first choice players who withdrew their names due to a financial spat with the board. Considering the strength of this side, the magnitude of the series-win is huge, specially after the humiliation in the Test series in which
Bangladesh hit a new Test low being all out for 43 runs in the first innings of the first Test and never could go past 200 runs in any innings of the series.
Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortafa identified the problem lied in the good start, which was the responsibility of Tamim Iqbal. As the opener couldn’t play to his potential, Bangladesh got humiliated in a manner which created a huge uproar in the country.
Ahead of leaving the country for ODI series, Mashrafe said, if Tamim could give a proper start, they would probably go to win the series. And it was preciously right.
Stat suggested that Tamim played his best ever series in outside Asia and broke record after record. Following up his 130 not out and 54, in the final match, he blasted another match-winning 103 off 124, smacking seven fours and two sixes. It meant, he ended the series with 287 runs, averaging a staggering 143.50.
In the process, the prolific southpaw registered the record for most runs by any batsman in a three-match ODI series in the Caribbean Islands. It’s not though his highest run in a three-match bilateral series however. Tamim made 312 runs against Pakistan in 2015 at home, which still remains his highest. Pakistan’s Babar Azam holds the record 360 runs in a three-match bilateral series against West Indies in UAE.
"We didn't have a great Test series, so we practiced a lot. But this is a format we are comfortable in. What I wanted to do was bat long, my team asked me to bat long, so I did it successfully. The wicket in West Indies is never easy, but you have to be patient here. Patience is the key and that's why I got the big runs,” Tamim said of his amazing consistency.
Tamim actually led the series victory in which all seniors contributed a lot. Shakib Al Hasan also got two half-centuries including 97 in the first match. Mushfiqur Rahim couldn’t finish off the game despite his 67 ball-68 in the second match but his 11 ball-30 gave Bangladesh a late flourish in the first match which helped Bangladesh win that game by 48 runs. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza also was in wicket-taking mood in every game. However the juniors performance was disappointing and gave the team management to look into the matter as they are preparing a team for the 2019 World Cup in England.
"Cricket is a mental game. But boys stepped up from the first ODI itself, but we played well for the most part of the game even when we lost in match 2. Boys are in good touch so the juniors need to step up too. Bowlers were good in all three games, and now we need to start the T20s confidently. West Indies are a great T20I team,” Mashrafe Bin Mortaza said after the match.
