Man killed in Savar clash

A man was killed and ten others injured in a clash between two groups of people over alleged violation of a minor girl in Uttar Jamsing area in Savar early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Selim Mia, a fish trader and a resident of the area. The incident took place when two groups of local people locked into a clash centring the arrest of Kuwait expatriate Kabir Hossain for allegedly raping a minor girl of the area, said Sub-inspector Mohsin Mia of Savar Model Police Station. At one stage one Abdul Kader Molla hit Selim Mia with a sharp weapon for protesting Molla’s stand in favour of the ‘rapist, triggering the clash around 12 am, the OC added. Later, Selim was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Tyre blast kills truck driver

A truck driver was killed when a wheel of a truck exploded at Hemayetpur, on the outskirts of the capital, early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Selim Mia, 30, of Manikganj district. Mohsinul Quader, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said Selim was pumping air into a wheel of his truck at Joynabari Molla CNG Filling Station at the dead of night. Suddenly the wheel exploded with a big bang, leaving Selim dead on the spot, he added.

Cop injured in cocktail attack

A sub-inspector (SI) of police was injured in cocktail attack at Rashid Chattor area of Sylhet city on Wednesday night. SI Raihan Ahmad is deployed in Kadamtali Outpost in South Surma. Khairul Fazal, officer-in-charge of South Surma Police Station, said SI Raihan was going to Kadamtali by riding motorcycle from the South Surma Police Station. On the way, a group of youths came in with a procession and threw some cocktails targeting him, leaving injured in cocktail blast around 9:30 pm. Later, he took at Sylhet Osmani Hospital for treatment. However, it could not be known who were involved in this cocktail attack, the OC added.

Death anniversary of journo Novera Deepita today

The 12th death anniversary of Novera Deepita, a journalist of The Daily Star and a gold-medalist student of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University, will be observed today. “Novera Deepita Memorial Trust” has taken elaborate programmes marking the day, said a press release yesterday. The Trust will award “Novera Deepita Memorial Scholarship” to the student achieving the highest marks in BA (hons) examinations under the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University. The recipient will receive Taka 25,000 and a certificate. Other programmes arranged by the Trust include praying at her grave in Azimpur cemetery at dawn, donation in orphanages and a milad mahfil.

No need to import sacrificial animals, says minister

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda yesterday urged the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to remain alert to prevent rumours creating artificial crisis of sacrificial animals in the country during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, reports BSS. “The country has adequate sacrificial animals…I urge all of you to remain alert so that none can spread rumours to create artificial crisis of sacrificial animals…

We need not to bring animals from outside the country,” he told the DCs. The minister was speaking at a meeting with the heads of country’s district administrations on the third day of three-day DC Conference at the Cabinet Division here. “Please remain alert against the culprits who would want to create an unstable situation in the animal market,” Narayan said.

The sacrificial animals would be brought under the health screening, he said, adding the government has taken all preparations so that the people can sacrifice quality and healthy animals.
