SC to hear
leave-to-appeal against HC
order on Oct 8

The chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday sent a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the Bus Owners' Association against the High Court (HC) order that had directed the owners and driver of a bus and an insurance company to pay Tk. 4,61,75,452 as compensation to the family of the filmmaker Tareque Masud who was killed in a bus accident in 2011. Justice Hassan Foyez Siddique, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, also fixed October 8 for hearing on the leave-to-appeal petition before the full bench of the apex court. The chamber judge came up with the order following a petition filed by the Bus Owners’ Association against the HC order that had asked it to compensate the family members of Masud.

In an order, the HC bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo had, on December 3 last year, directed the authorities to pay Tk. 4,61,75,452 as compensation to the family of Masud. It had also asked the owners, the driver and the insurance company to pay the compensation within three months.

Cannes award-winning filmmaker Masud, former ATN news chief executive officer Mishuk Munier and three others were killed on the spot when a bus belonging to the Chuadanga Deluxe Bus Service collided with a microbus carrying them on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Joka, Manikganj, on August 13, 2011.
