Budget talks held at NSU

Young Economists’ Forum (YEF) of North South University’s premier co-curricular club on Wednesday organised Budget Talk 2018, a significantly noteworthy panel discussion on the strategies and particularities of the recently passed Fiscal Budget for the fiscal year 2018-2019, says a press release.

Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, senior secretary, Internal Resources Division (IRD) and Chairman, National Board of Revenue (NBR) was the chief guest. Also in attendance were the distinguished discussants, Mohiuddin Khan, Additional Secretary (Development), Secondary and Higher Education, Education Ministry, Government of Bangladesh; Dr. Nazneen Ahmed, Senior Research Fellow, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies and Mominul Islam, Managing Director and CEO, IPDC Finance LTD.

M A Hashem, Chairman, Board of Trustees, NSU and Prof Atiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor, NSU graced the event as the Special Guest and the Chair of the Session respectively.

The event began with a key note speech by Dr Salma Begum, who provided an all-encompassing overview of the fiscal budget, acquainting speakers and audience alike to the concepts at hand. The panelists explored topics as diverse as the financial sector’s liquidity crisis to the existing wealth inequality within the country. Following the address by the panelists, a question and answer session ensued.

DIU researchers innovate technology  for preserving agro products

Researchers of the Nutrition and Food Engineering (NFE) epartment in Daffodil International University (DIU), Savar, have innovated a new technology for preserving seasonal fruits and vegetables for a long time.

The technology called ‘Multi Community Solar Tunnel Dryer Plant’ is the outcome of a research conducted with the cooperation of Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP). Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday formally launched the technology at a function on the DIU permanent campus at Savar, said a press release here. In the function, the minister also inaugurated the two-day NEF Career Expo-2018. DIU Vice-Chancellor Prof Yousuf Mahbubul Islam presided over the function while icddr,b Senior Director Dr Tahmeed Ahmed and Head of the Nutrition and Food Engineering Department Prof M Belal Hossain, among others, delivered speeches.

In his speech, Amu said the National Industrial Policy-2016 has given top priority to food processing and agriculture machineries for ensuring food security in the country. Under the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said, the government has formed a taskforce for developing agro products.

He said that Bangladesh is now exporting processed foods to more than 140 countries.

BUP, GP ink deal to promote research

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) and Grammenphone (GP) yesterday to establish bilateral relations in academic and research fields.

BUP Registrar Brigadier General Abul Kashem Md Ibrahim and Grammenphone Chief Human Resource Officer Syed Tanvir Husain signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides at Bijoy Auditorium on the BUP campus in Mirpur Cantonment in the capital, a BUP press release said. Grammenphone Chief Executive Officer Michael Foley, BUP Vice-Chancellor Major General Md Emdad-Ul-Bari and its Pro-VC Professor M Abul Kashem Mozumder were, among others, present at the agreement signing ceremony.

Int’l media confce at CU begins tomorrow

Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Chittagong will host a three-day international conference on media and communication at the university campus beginning from Tuesday. The theme of the conference is 'Media, Communication and Journalism: Prospects and Challenges in Bangladesh and Beyond', said a press release issued on Friday.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu will attend the inaugural session of the conference as the chief guest at AK Khan Law Faculty Auditorium on Tuesday morning.

CU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury will chair the inaugural session while Bengali daily Dainik Azadi Editor MA Malek will be the special guest.

University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan will attend as the chief guest in the closing session while CU Pro Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Shireen Akhter will be attending.

Western Marine Shipyard Ltd Managing Director Engr Md Sakhawat Hossain will present as the special guest at the closing session to be held on Thursday afternoon.
