Two US professors meet DU VC
Professor Dr Steve Goodbred and Professor Dr Jonathan M Gilligan of Vanderbilt University, USA, called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman on the university campus on Wednesday.
Chairman of the Department of Environmental Development and Risk Management of Technical University of Dresden, Germany, Professor Dr Bishawjit Mallick; Chairman of the Department of Geology of DU Professor Dr Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed and Associate Professor of the Department of Fisheries of DU Dr Md Monirul Islam were present.
During the meeting at the VC’s office, they discussed the possibilities of strengthening ongoing joint collaborative academic and research programmes on climate change, environment, river erosion, water pollution and arsenic being conducted by the University of Dhaka and Vanderbilt University, USA.
Exchanges of data, information and sharing knowledge and experience on climate change issues between the two universities were also discussed in the meeting.
They stressed producing more experts and environmental scientists in Bangladesh to reduce risk of vulnerable coastal people.
They discussed signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two universities to promote education and research in this regard.
850 teachers, students to receive tech edn in China
A total of 50 teachers and 800 students are going to China soon with scholarship to take technical education there. The students will study in three-year diploma engineering while the teachers will obtain bachelor, master and PhD degrees, said an official release.
A 44-member Chinese delegation, including representatives from the government and 17 Chinese educational institutions, are now selecting the scholarship awardees in Bangladesh, the release added.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, State Minister for Technical and Madrasah Education Division (TMED) Kazi Keramat Ali, Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Sohrab Hossain, TMED Secretary Md Alamgir and Chinese Envoy in Dhaka Zhang Zuo Un met the delegation at a function held at a city hotel last night. Last year, 308 students got enrolled in 10 Chinese educational institutions with scholarship.
