Viquarunnisa Noon School & College emerged champions in the Polar Icecream 23rd School Handball Tournament when they outplayed Sunnydale 14-1 in the final at the Shaheed Monsur Ali Handball Stadium in the capital yesterday. The winners led the first half 10-1.
Earlier the champions almost in a similar fashion defeated Dhanmondi Tutorial 19-1 in the first semifinal. Fatema with eight goals was the top scorer for Viquarunnisa, while Aditi followed her with six goals. Sunnydale had to strive hard to down Scholastica by an odd goal in eleven in the second semifinal. Nikita and Tasnia netted three goals each for Sunnydale. Fatema of Viquarunnisa was adjudged the best player of the tournament. Scholastica bagged the third spot beating Dhanmondi Tutorial 4-0 in a play-off for the third-fourth deciding match. Shah Masud Imam, CEO of Polar Icrecream Industries Ltd, distributed prizes as chief guest. Bangladesh Handball Federation general secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor was also present on the occasion.
It was 15th time that Viquarunnisa clinched the title since the inception of the tournament in 1988. The tally included 12 times in a row between1990 and 2003. Scholastica triumphed the title for fives times. Meanwhile, the first round matches of the boys’ event were held yesterday and the second round matches will be held today from 9 am to 3 pm.
