Teachers and students of Geography and Environment department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday formed a human chain on the campus demanding safe highway. They also demanded the compensation for the death of a former student Shahriar Saurav Sezan, who was student of JU geography and environment. Shejan was killed by a tragic road accident on July 1 at Kalshi area of Dhaka. He was a fellow researcher of ‘Teach for Bangladesh’.
About at 11 am, over three hundred students and teachers brought out a mourn procession from the department that ended followed by a human chain on the Amar Ekushey premises after parading different roads on the campus. Addressing the programme, Chairman of Geography and Environment department Professor Shahedur Rashid said, ‘Sezan was very meritorious and he was also my favourite student. We got profound shocked at his premature death’.
He also expressed condolences for the bereaved family members on behalf of the department and he urged the government to ban all poor fitness vehicles on the roads, the execution of the driver and to compensate to the victim family within a short time span.
Professor Mizanur Rahman, Associate Professor Khandaker Hasan Mahmud, Assistant professor Abdullah Khan, Assistant professor Rezaul Rakib, Assistant Professor Anwarul Haque Mandal and other teachers and students of the department were also present in the human chain.
