70th birth anniv of actress Dolly Anwar celebrated

Celebrating the 70th birth anniversary of prominent actress Dolly Anwar, Moviyana Film Society, in association with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), organised a commemorative programme at the Seminar Room of BSA on July 1.

Eminent filmmaker Masihuddin Shaker, who directed Dolly’s first film ‘Surjo Dighal Bari’, discussed about the contribution of Dolly Anwar at the event. Presided over by BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky, Moinuddin Khaled, Mahmudul Hossain Dulal, Belayet Hossain Mamun, Hashem Sufi, among others, were present at the event.

Besides, ‘Dohon’, one of the only two films acted by Dolly Anwar, was screened at the event.

Born on July 1 in 1948, Dolly Anwar was a Bangladeshi stage, television and film actress and writer and editor of Saatdin magazine. She began her career on stage at the age of 13. At 16, she played one of the principal characters on Bangladesh Television’s first ever play ‘Aktala Dotala’ by Professor Munier Choudhury. She began acting in films in the late 1970s, collaborating most frequently with the directors Sheikh Niamat Ali and Mohiuddin Shakir. Her film debut was the 1980 award-winning ‘Surjo Dighal Bari’. She also acted in ‘Dahan’ (1986) and a variety of documentaries.

She was awarded the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress in 1979 for her role in the film ‘Surjo Dighol Bari’. Anwar committed suicide on 3 July in 1991.
