Moulvibazar: The export-import activities with India through Chatlapur check-post in Kulaura upazila remained suspended for the last 13 days as a five-km portion of the road stretching from Amtala to the check-post was damaged badly by the recent flood, reports UNB.
Large potholes were created in at least 12 points of the road, making it unfit for use.
On June 13, the road from Sanjabpur to Chatlapur check-post went under 5-6 foot water following the collapse of the embankment of the Manu River. The gushing water washed away sections of the road and culverts.
Local residents were struggling a lot to cross the portion of the road on foot.
Zunab Ali, Sharifpur Union Parishad Chairman, said roads, culverts, bridges and dwelling houses were damaged by the floodwater, causing huge losses.
He demanded immediate start of the renovation work of the road.
SI Jamal Hossain, immigration officer at the Chatlapur check-post, said nearly 100 people used to travel between Bangladesh to India every day.
However, no one can travel now following the dilapidated road, he said, urging the authorities concerned to take steps to repair the road. “Or else, the communication between the two countries will remain suspended, depriving the government of huge revenue.”
Tofail Islam, deputy commissioner of the district, said the road will be repaired on a priority basis.
