Tamim earns first ever gold for Bangladesh

Archer Mohammad Tamimul Islam earned the distinction of winning the first ever gold medal for Bangladesh in the Commonwealth Youth Games  at the Tuanaimato Sports Facility in Samoa yesterday. Tamim  defeated Nishanta Kumawat of India in the boys’ recurve bow individual event. Earlier he finished third in the qualifying round before making a room into the elimination round.
Bangladesh also bagged a bronze medal through Nandini Khan Swapna on the sixth day (Thursday) of fifth edition of Youth Commonwealth Games in the girls recurve bow individual event. She defeated Noor Amalia of Malaysia in the final. Earlier, Bangladesh won their maiden medal when Fayema Akhtar Moina clinched a bronze medal in weightlifting event at Pune Commonwealth Games in 2008.
Bangladesh Olympic Association president and secretary general congratulated Tamim and Nandini for winning gold and bronze medal respectively. Mohammad Sajjad Hossain acted as coach of  two member Bangladesh archery team. The week long Commonwealth Youth Games will end today. A 14-member Bangladesh contingent led by BOA vice-president Mizanur Rahman Manu took part in five disciplines—athletics, archery, boxing, squash and swimming. The Bangladesh contingent will return home on September 13 at 12.10 am by a Malaysia Airlines flight.
UNB adds: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday greeted Bangladesh archery team for winning the gold and bronze medals in the 5th Commonwealth Youth Games being held in Samoa. In a message, the Prime Minister greeted all concerned along with the Bangladesh archery team.
Sheikh Hasina also hoped that Bangladesh archery team would continue their winning spree in such international events. “I hope they would uphold Bangladesh’s red-green flag in the world sports,” she said. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Football Federation has hailed the gold and bronze medal winning archers at the 5th Commonwealth Games in Samoa. Bangladesh Rugby Union has also extended its felicitation to triumphant archery team.
