‘Cattle thief’ beaten dead
A suspected cattle thief was beaten to death by a group of villagers at Shirirchala in sadar upazila in Sylhet early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Yunus Ali, 45. Witnesses said a gang of cattle thieves numbering
4-5 entered the house of one Arif Hossain in the
early morning.
Later, informed, locals encircled the thieves while the gang was trying to flee after picking up two cattle from the house. After a hot chase, they caught one of the gang members, Yunus, while others managed to flee.
The villagers beat up the thief mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot. On information, police recovered the body.

Man shot dead in Khulna

A man was beaten and shot to death by some unidentified miscreants at Rahimnagar in Rupsha upazila in Khuln on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Faruque Hossain
Molla, 45, a receipt in-charge of Fresh Food Limited and son of Khaleque Molla, a resident of Rahimnagar village of the area.
Police said some unidentified miscreants in an attack beat and shot Faruque at Rahimnagar village around 10:30pm when he was returning from his workplace, leaving him critically injured.
Later locals rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead. Officer-in-charge of Rupsha police station Mesba Uddin confirmed the incident.

Burnt ship-breaker dies

A ship-breaking worker succumbed to his burn injuries on Wednesday morning at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Khokon, 34. Dr Mohammad Saifuddin Khaled, assistant professor of Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of the CMCH said the worker died at around 11am while undergoing treatment at the hospital.  “Mohammad Khokon was in a risky state as he sustained 50 per cent burn injuries. We tried our level best. However, the ill-fated worker could not be saved as he suffered serious injuries in his respiratory organs,” added the physician.
It may be mentioned that eight workers sustained severe burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion in Sheetal Entreprise, a ship-breaking yard at South Sonaichhari under Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong on September 5.

19 Shibir men held in Sylhet

Police in a drive arrested 19 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir from a student mess in Madina Market area of the city in Sylhet yesterday.
The arrestees are students of different universities, including Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.
On secret information, a joint team of Kotwali, Jalalabad and Bimanbandar police stations conducted the drive in the area and arrested them from the mess in the evening.
Sohel Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, confirmed the incident.
