‘Pir’ arrested for ‘harassing’ women in Manikganj

Manikganj: Police on Wednesday arrested a ‘Pir’ (religious leader) for his alleged involvement in harassing women in Bhatbaur village of Sadar upazila, reports UNB. The arrestee was identified as Abu Taher, 57, a residence of the village. Locals said that Lutfur Rahman, a devotee of the Pir and hailing from Tillir Char village in Saturia upazila, used to visit him along with his wife with a hope to be blessed with a child. Abu Taher tried to violate Lutfur’s wife with a promise to be blessed with a baby. Later, Lutfur Rahman filed a written complaint with Dighi Union Parishad over the matter. Following the allegation and other reports against the Pir, village arbitration was arranged on Wednesday where locals gave him a good thrash and handed over to police. Rakibuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said a case was filed against Abu Taher under Women and Children Repression Act.

Man hacked dead in Mymensingh

A man was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants at village Dakatia in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh early yesterday. The victim was identified as Saiful Islam, 42, son of late Nokres Ali of village Dakatia in the upazila. Quoting family sources, Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Police Station said, Saiful went out of his house around 8pm for tarabi prayers and did not come back home. Relatives searched him here and there but could not trace him.  Local people found the body at the village yesterday morning and informed police. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Miscreants might have killed him in the early hours of yesterday. Police is investigating into the killing.

Road crash kills 4 in 2 dists

Four people were killed in road accidents in Gopalganj and Kushtia yesterday. In Gopalganj, three workers were killed as a truck carrying them plunged into a roadside ditch at Satashia village in Kashiani upazila yesterday afternoon, reports UNB. Mazharul Haque, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kashiani Police Station, said the accident took place around 1pm when the paddy-laden truck plunged into the ditch, leaving three workers dead on the spot and five others injured. In Kushtia, a woman was killed when a trolley hit her on Daulatpur-Thanamor road at Bajudanga in Daulatpur upazila yesterday, reports BSS. Shaha Dara Khan, officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station, said Marina Khatun, 45, wife of Mahral Mandal of Shashidharpur vilalge in the upazila was killed when a trolley hit her while crossing the road.
