A faction of Awami League (AL) backed teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday observed a two-hour work abstention on the campus to protest the alleged violation of university acts, statutes and syndicate conducting rules by VC Professor Farzana Islam.
According to their pre-announced schedule, their work abstention started from 10am and continued till 12pm. Meanwhile, during the work abstention, over 20 teachers of this group besieged JU VC office hanging a banner at the main entrance point of the office. Spokesman and General Secretary of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwashi Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj’ Associate Professor Farid Ahmed said, “Recently VC released two teachers from Transport office illegally without any consult of syndicate and appointed another two teachers. Earlier, she also appointed nine hall provosts and deans”.
“To protest the despotic decision by VC Professor Farzana Islam, we are observing this programme”, he added. Denouncing JU VC, he said, “According to the university act, emergency senate assembly has to be held within 21 days after the submission of a memorandum to VC signed by above 30 senators. We submitted a memorandum to her in this regard. As she did not take initiative, she definitely violated the act”. He announced to go nonstop movement after Eid vacation if the VC will not take initiative to call syndicate, senate and arrange VC panel election.
