Ruling Awami League yesterday picked Habibun Nahar as its candidate for contesting the Bagerhat-3 by-polls slated for June 26 next, reports UNB. The decision was taken at an Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) meeting held with its President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at her official residence Ganabhaban.

On April 10 last, the parliamentary seat fell vacant following the resignation of Awami League MP Talukdar Abdul Khalek who has recently been elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation. The Election Commission on May 16 announced the schedule for the by-election to Bagerhat-3 constituency fixing June 26 for the voting.

According to the schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination paper is May 24 while the date for scrutinising nomination papers is May 27and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 3.
