3 to die for killing man

A court in Dhaka on Sunday awarded death penalty to three people and life imprisonment to seven others for killing a businessman for extortion in Keraniganj in 2006. The condemned convicts are Maruf Hossain, 24, Titu, 21, and Liton, 20, while the lifers are Amzad Hossain Liton, 21, Sabbir, 22, Abdul Goni, 22, Wasim Kasai, 25, Samrat, 30, Nantu, 20, Nabab, 31. Of them, Titu, Liton, Samrat and Nabab were present in the dock when the verdict was pronounced. According to the prosecution, the convicts shot Bachchu Miah to death at Jinjira of Keraniganj on June 18, 2006 over an extortion of Tk 20 lakh. Victim’s brother Matiur Rahman had filed a case against 11 people over the incident. Of the accused, ‘Dakat’ Shaheed was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in 2012.

Case filed over vandalising weighing station   

A case has been filed in connection with vandalising the weighing station in Borodarogahat area of Sitakundu. Rabiul Hossain, deputy-divisional engineer of Roads and Highways division, filed the case against 200 unnamed people with Sitakundu Police Station on Sunday night, said Iftekhar Hasan, officer-in-charge of the police station. Besides, the weighing machine went inoperative following the vandalism.Earlier on Saturday, the vandalism occurred following an altercation between on-duty ansar member and transport workers.

9 food shops fined

A Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) mobile court fined nine fast food shops Tk 4.30 lakh in the capital’s New Market area on Sunday for selling unhygienic food. The drive was conducted as part of the DMP’s ongoing special drive throughout the fasting month of Ramadan, said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman. During the drive, led by Executive Magistrate Mohammad Mashiur Rahman, Food Corner was fined Tk 1 lakh while Kings Fast Food, Penji Fast Food, Kepray Fast Food, Capital Fast Food, Al Amin Food and Saikat Fast Food were penalised Tk 50,000 each, and Welcome Fast Food and Al Jaber Fast Food were fined Tk 10,000 and Tk 20,000 respectively. The anti-adulteration drive will continue, Masudur said.

Drive to control price hike

Market monitoring cells of the district administration conducted drives in city’s different kitchen markets In Khulna to control the price hike of essentials during the holy Ramadan. The team led by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Ziaur Rahman visited Sheikh Para kitchen market and KDA kitchen market yesterday.

The team, however, did not find any irregularities. During the visit, ADM Ziaur Rahman urged businessmen not to earn abnormal profit during the holy month. He also asked leaders of kitchen market committee to hang price list of essential commodities everyday so that traders cannot charge extra prices from customers. From now on, the market monitoring cell will conduct drive at kitchen markets everyday to restrain skyrocket prices of essentials, he said, adding that legal action will be taken if any businessman takes excessive prices from customers.

3 held with arms, drugs

Police early Sunday in a drive in the city’s Barishal Colony arrested three people along with 623 pieces of contraband yaba tablets, four rounds of bullets, a-foreign made pistol. Three arrestees were identified as Md Hanif, 35, son of Md Abdur Raouf, hailing from Sonagazi upazila of Feni district, Kazi Md Abdullah, 28, son of Kazi Md Golam Mawla, hailing from Satkania upazila in Chattogram, and Khokon Kumar Das, 32, son of Ranjit Kumar Das, hailing from Patiya upazila in Chattogram. Nezam Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadarghat Police Station said “They are involved with drugs peddling for a long time. A case was lodged over the recovery of the drugs and arms.”
