CHATTOGRAM: The district administration on Sunday launched an eviction drive in different hilly areas of the port city ahead of the rainy season to avert possible loss of lives from landslides, reports UNB. During the drive that started in the morning and continued till 1 pm, several residents of the highly risky areas under Akbar Shah Police Station were evicted. Sheikh Jobaer Ahmed, assistant commissioner (AC land) in Kattoli circle led the drive in in association with the Department of Environment, police, Ansar, and other concerned departments.
Around 100 families were living in the danger zones including slopes of hills here, said the AC land adding, “Today (Sunday) we have evicted several families as well as we have disconnected all the illegal connections of electricity, gas and water in the area.” As thousands of people have been living on the slopes of hills, many of them die every year from landslides during the monsoon.
