South Africa former batsman Gary Kirsten arrived here in Dhaka yesterday evening to join the Bangladesh team ahead of their T20 Interna0tional series against the improved Afghanistan.
Kawsar Azam Sojib, logistic manager of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed Kirsten’s arrival from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently appointed Kirsten as a batting consultant for the Tigers.
Kirsten will assist BCB to get a quality and high-profile head coach for the Bangladesh team, the post of head coach remained vacant since November last year after Chandika Hathurusingha abruptly resigned from his job.
The 50-year-old South African coached Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), who failed to make their place in the play-offs of the cash-rich T20 tournament.
He arrived in Dhaka after the end of his IPL stint what was informed by BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon during the reception ceremony of the former Bangladesh coach Gordon Greenidge.
Papon said, “Kirsten’s experience will be benefited for us. We’ve prepared a list of three-four coaches’ names. Now we needed to get know his opinion. He also prepared a list of coaches. It may even be that the names of his list are better than us. He is working on what type of coach we needed. Hopefully we could be something visible within this month.”
The Quinquagenarian, who had played 101 Tests for the Proteas along with 185 ODIs before being retired from international cricket in 2004, first took the charge of Team India and successfully assisted them to clinch World Cup crown.
