Sommilito Muktijoddha Projonmo, a pro-freedom fighter group, on Thursday held a demonstration at Shahbagh area in the city pressing home its six-point demand, reports UNB.
The demonstrators urged the government to formulate a special law for safety and security of the freedom fighters, and spoke in favour of giving them constitutional recognition. The organisation also issued a press release outlining their demands.
The group sought continuation of existing government facilities currently being provided to the freedom fighters.
The group also requested the government to identify those defaming Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Liberation War of 1971 and freedom fighters, and bring them to justice. In the press release, the group called for ensuring punishment of those who attacked and vandalized the Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence during the quota reform movement.
Demonstrators demanded that people harbouring anti-liberation sentiments, and members of Jammat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir be suspended from public service and put on trial.
The pro-freedom fighters’ group also requested the government to track down fake freedom fighters and put them on trial.
Those conspiring against the real freedom fighters should also be brought to justice, said the demonstrators.
