A union level leader of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was allegedly killed at Taminagar village in Shailkupa upazila on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Abu Jafar, 45, of the village and President of Umedpur union unit nof BNP. Police arrested local Chhatra League activist Ripon, 19, for his suspected involvement in the killing. Jafar’s brother Uthan Member said Jafar was beaten up by a gang of AL men and activists of its front organisations when he was returning home from local Royera Bazer on the day. He was rescued by locals and taken to Shailkupa upazila health complex. But, later while being shifted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital he succumbed to his injuries at about 10.30 pm.
