Workshop on research, development held

Speakers at a workshop here today suggested strengthening the agriculture information services with the help of Bangladesh National Scientific and Technical Documentation Center (BANSDOC) for effective research to sustain the country's food production, reports BSS.

The country's agriculture research system can be enriched with update information services provided by the BANSDOC, a national organisation, for facing the upcoming challenge of the sector, they said.

They were speaking at a workshop on "Research, development, potentiality of the agriculture sector and information services of BANSDOC”, arranged by BANSDOC at its auditorium in the city.

Science and Technology Minister Yafesh Osman spoke at the inaugural session as the chief guest while Science and Technology Secretary Mohammad Anwar Hossen and Vice Chancellor of the Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University Professor Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed spoke as the special guests.

"Bangladesh needs strong research for agriculture sector as the country can uplift its production facing climate change impacts", said M Anwar Hossain.

"The large part of the allocation for the science and technology ministry goes to agriculture scientists for carrying out research," he added.

"Currently, we are feeding around 16 crore people and in future we have to feed 25 crore people, so we have to improve our agriculture research," the secretary said.

“Information is the main source of development ...So we have to update our information system for development of our research and technology," said Yafesh Osman in his address.
