Police yesterday foiled a demonstration programme of BNP in the district town protesting the gas and power price hike. Following the central program, district BNP brought out a procession from Nazir Moholla area of the city. Police stopped the procession charging baton in Gail gait area. They arrested three, including Aktar Hosen, Mahbubul Alam and Sams Tarbig, from the spot. Five persons were injured during police attack. Police later foiled the city BNP meeting in front of BNP office at Sadar Road of the city cordoning off the area. City BNP later held a protest meeting inside the BNP office.
RAJSHAHI Correspondent adds: Leaders and activists of Rajshahi City BNP took out a procession in the city in protest against increase of price of gas and electricity as a part of countrywide programme yesterday afternoon.
The procession started from in front of Malopara party office and paraded various city streets chanting slogans against the government. Later, BNP organised a way side meeting where Waliul Haque Rana, President of Juba Dal Rajshahi City unit attended as the chief guest.
In the speech Advocate Rana said the government has totally failed to run the country and the soil from the feet of the government has been removed. That is why; the government was relentlessly increasing prices of electricity and gas though the price of fuel was decreasing in the international markets. The government increased power price by 2.97 percent and that of gas by 26.29 percent, which came into effect on September 1.
