Hundreds of residents of Naruli Purba para in Bogra surrounded the Naruli police outpost around 11.30am yesterday, demanding the arrest of Abdul Aziz, a local resident accused of hacking his wife to death on Thursday.
On receiving information, additional police forces rushed to the spot. The irate locals lifted the human chain they had organised and withdrew after the police assured them that they would arrest the accused immediately.
Abdul Aziz allegedly hacked his wife to death with an axe around 9.30pm on Thursday. The victim was identified as Shakila Begum, 22, daughter of Sakawat Hossain Sarker of Naruli area in the town.
Family sources said Shakila had married Abdul Aziz, a resident of the same area, four years ago, following a love affair. As the groom’s family refused to accept the marriage, he had been living with the bride’s family.
Police sources said the couple went to the market and bought some clothes on Thursday afternoon. They returned home around 9pm and quarrelled with each other over a trivial issue. At one point, Abdul Aziz hit his wife with an axe on her head. Locals rescued his wife and rushed her to Bogra Shahed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. The doctor on duty at the emergency section declared her dead.
A case was lodged in this connection with Bogra Sadar police station yesterday. However, the police had not arrested the murderer tillyesterday evening.
