BRTA’s drive against unfit vehicles
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) yesterday launched drives against unfit and faulty vehicles in different parts of the capital. Shawkat Ali, secretary of BRTA, said the drive began at Manik Mia Avenue around 9am. The drives are being conducted against unfit vehicles and to raise awareness among city dwellers about road safety, said the official. Unfit vehicles were being fined by the mobile courts in the presence of BRTA officials, he added. Meanwhile, Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader visited the spot at Manik Mia Avenue.
Body recovered from Buriganga
Police recovered the floating body of an unidentified man from the Buriganga River in Keraniganj on Sunday night. Locals spotted the body of the young man, aged around 35, in the night and informed police, said Bijon Kumar Das, sub-inspector of Keraniganj Model Police Station. Later, police recovered the body from inside a sack where the victim's hands and legs were tied with a rope and sent it to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said police.
2422 cases filed for traffic rule violations
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a day-long drive on Sunday filed 2422 cases on charges of traffic rule violation. Traffic division in their simultaneous drives on the city streets filed the cases against traffic rule violators and realised over Taka 20 lakh, said an official release of DMP. It also dumped 29 vehicles and wrecked 383 others. Of the cases, 190 were lodged for driving on the wrong sides, 76 for using hydraulic horn, seven for using hotter and beckon light and 20 others for using tinted glass, it also said.
Some 84 cases including 39 video cases were lodged against drivers of different modes of vehicles on charges of talking over mobile phone while they were driving.
RMP launches footpath clean drive in Rajshahi
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) yesterday launched a drive to free the street-sides and footpaths from illegal occupation today as part of its efforts to make the city clean. Police conducted the drive at Shaheb Bazar area, main commercial hub of the metropolis. All illegal occupations from Zero point to Moni crossing were evicted. Aman Ullah, Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Model Police Station, said the small businessmen and vendors erect illegal infrastructure on footpath, even on the main roads, regularly making the road dirty. The unauthorized occupation of the roads and footpath also causes traffic jam badly side by side with hindering the pedestrian movement. In phases, police will evict all illegal occupation on roads and footpaths for the sake of freeing the city from traffic jam coupled with reducing the peoples sufferings, the police officer added.
2 killed in Rangpur road accident
Two persons, including a Jubo League leader, were killed in a road accident at Fakirerhat point on the Mithapukur- Fulbari regional highway under Mithapukur upazila here yesterday, police said. “The accident occurred when a private car hit an aged person sitting by the roadside, overturned and hit a roadside house at 9 am," Sub-inspector (SI) of Mithapukur Thana Ashish Kumar said. “Aged person Alef Uddin, 60, son of Ayen Uddin of village Gilajhuki under Mithapukur upazila and owner of the private car Mostafizar Rahman Fizar, 40, vice-president of Dinajpur Sadar upazila unit of Jubo League were killed on the spot,” the SI said. Mostafizar Rahman, son of Alhaj Yunus Ali, hailed from village Boraipur under Sadar upazila in Dinajpur. Mostafizar was returning home alone from his father-in-law's house in village Chharan under Mithapukur upazila when the tragic accident took place.
