6 get life for murder in Narsingdi

Narsingdi: A court here yesterday convicted six people of killing a trader here in 2003 and sentenced them to life imprisonment, reports UNB.

The convicts are Anwar Hossain, 32, Mosharraf Hossain, 35, Firoz Miah, 40, Zilhas alias Juhash, 30, Ataur Rahman, 50, and Akbar Ali, 42, of Kurerpar village in Sadar upazila. Of them, Mosharraf and Firoz were tried in absentia.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the body of Golap Hossain, a trader, was found in 10 pieces on the bank of the Brahmmaputra River in Kurerpar area on January 21, 2003, three days after he went missing.

Victim’s brother filed a case with Sadar Police Station in this connection. Police arrested the convicts and they made confessional statements before the court.

Police submitted a charge-sheet against seven people.

After examining the records and witnesses, Narsingdi Additional District and Session’s Judge AKM Mozammel Haque Chowdhury handed down the verdict acquitting an accused as the allegation brought against him could not be proved.

Tangail UP chairman, another sent to jail in forgery case

Tangail: A court here on Sunday sent two people, including a UP chairman, to jail in a cheating and forgery case, reports UNB.

 Senior Judicial Magistrate Aminul Islam passed the order when they surrendered before his court seeking bail in the case. The accused are Moinuddin Talukdar, chairman of Deopara union parishad in Ghatail, and Moslem Uddin, father-in-law of the complainant, hailing from Deopara village.

According to the case statement, Moslem’s son Lutfar Rahman who used to work in Saudi Arabia died in 2016.

After Lutfar’s death, his father and the chairman fabricated a fake inheritance certificate mentioning that Lutfar left another family in Saudi Arabia.

Later, Sultana Begum, Lutfar’s wife, filed a case accusing her father-in-law and the UP chairman with a local court on August 6, 2017.

One killed, 9 cops hurt in clash

A man was killed and nine policemen injured in a clash between two rival groups of local Awami League over establishing supremacy at Hat Krishnapur in Sadarpur upazila of Faridpur district yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mannan Shikder, 50, of Ramnagar village in the upazila.

According to police sources, there was a dispute between union parishad chairman Billal Fakir and Akhteruzzaman Titash, a supporter of local MP, over establishing supremacy in the area.

The supporters of both groups locked into clash on Sunday afternoon and vandalised several shops and houses in the area centering the lease of the market. Yesterday morning, as a sequel of the incident, a clash ensued again which left Mannan dead and nine policemen injured who rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.

Additional forces were deployed in and round the area to avoid any untoward situation, said Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Sadarpur Police Station.

‘Bring up children with

anti-corruption outlook’

RANGPUR: Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Public Administration Ministry HN Ashiqur Rahman has called for bringing up of the children with an anti-corruption outlook to build a corruption free society, reports BSS.

“It is not possible to establish a corruption free society without infusing moral education to the children as corruption has expanded everywhere causing erosion of social norms, values and principles,” he said.

Ashiqur Rahman expressed the views while addressing a function styled “The Best Corruption Prevention Committee (CPC) Award-2017” held at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner here on Sunday afternoon as the chief guest.

Rangpur District Combined Office of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) organised the event with assistance of the district and divisional administrations for distributing crests and medals among the best upazila and district level best CPCs of Rangpur division.
