The repairing work of ‘Amar Ekushey’ sculpture on Jahangirnagar University (JU) premises finished yesterday. The sculpture, which wears a new look due to the renovation work, shows a child, killed in gunfire, in his mother’s lap and a protesting student as a visual representation of the Language Movement.
JU Vice Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam inaugurated the sculpture as the chief guest after the completion of renovation work. Addressing the function, JU VC said, “To commemorate the Language Movement martyrs we have constructed this sculpture. It will inspire our students to learn our Bengali language and culture.”
The sculptor of Amar Ekushey, Jahanara Perveen, said, ‘During the tenure of former JU VC Professor Saleh Ahmed, this sculpture was constructed. In February 21 of 1991, he inaugurated the sculpture. But the whole structure of the sculpture did not complete then. Owing to negligence and lack of supervision, the sculpture suffered gradual erosion.”
She expressed gratitude to the JU authority for taking initiative to its renovation. The repairing work of the sculpture started in last October, 26 years after its commissioning.
