7 ‘kidnappers’ held in capital

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested seven alleged members of an organised kidnapping gang from Shahjalal International Airport area in the capital on Friday night. The arrested were identified as gang ringleader Jasim, 35, Shahidul,45, Sohag Hawladar,23, Monir Matabbar,29, Sanaul Bepari,42, Shohag Mia,29, and Nipa Begum, 28. Talking to The Independent, Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud, commanding officer of RAB-1 said getting secrete information, a team of Rab-1 conducted a drive in Shahjalal International Airport area on Friday. The elite force arrested the kidnapers and recovered a microbus, Tk50,000 cash,  cone gun, six mobile phone sets, a doping balm and a handcuff from  their possession. During the primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that the kidnappers had been collecting toll money after kidnapping many victims while they wait for public transport. There are several cases filed against Jasim with different police stations in connection with the drug trading, fake currency note circulation and car lifting. Earlier, he also worked as a source of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, RAB said. Claiming himself as an assistant police commissioner, Jashim would also kidnap passengers after forming an operation team, Lt Col Tuhin said. After physically torturing the victims, the abductors took ransom money through mobile banking system and credit cards. About the role of Nipa, the RAB-1 director said once she used to be a sex worker in Barisal but after coming across with Jashim, she came to Dhaka few months ago. They were living in a rented house at Tongi identifying themselves as a couple.
