To honour the memory of former Bangladesh hockey team captain and vice-president of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation, Khwaja Rahmatullah, Bangladesh Hockey Federation has decided to name the Club Cup Hockey tournament after the late hockey legend for his contribution in hockey’s development in the country.
In press conference organised by the federation yesterday, general secretary of Bangladesh Hockey Federation, Abdus Sadeque told that ‘Khwaja Rahmatullah Club Cup Hockey Tournament 2018’ will host six clubs in two groups. ‘Group-A’ consists of Abahani, Sonali Bank and Bangladesh Police Hockey Club, while ‘Group-B’ consists of Mariner Young’s Club, Ajax SC and Victoria SC.
The tournament will kick off at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium today.
Abdus Sadeque also added that the president of Bangladesh Cricket Board, Nazmul Hassan Papon will attend the inauguration ceremony as chief guest and Nadira Rahmatullah, the wife of late Khwaja Rahmatullah will be present at the ceremony as special guest.
The finals of the tournament will played on April 22.
Khwaja Rahmatullah was a versatile defender in the country's hockey arena during the 1980s, who passed away last year on October 24.
Formidable Abahani will take on Bangladesh Police in the opening match of Taka three lakh budgeted tournament at 5 pm. Mariners Young’s Club will face Victoria Sporting in the other natch under flood light at 7pm.
